Beelden op Reis 2016

Off the beaten path of the Vrijthof square and the chosen moment at the end of the summer, 'Beelden op het Vrijthof' will start to explore the region with “temporary bivouacs for the modern nomad”.

Modern nomads are at home wherever they may login. Their lifes take place in an urbanized landscape. A landscape threatened by ever increasing privatization and commercialization, where the real estate speculators drive up the cost of living for everyone. 'Beelden op Reis – Home is where the House is' addresses this problem and the ensuing trend of 'off-grid living' and 'tiny houses'. These houses meet all needs of the modern nomads on a small area. And they are characterized by the fact that they are easy to move. The modern nomads are thus independent to acquire their own place in the city and to engange in their entitlement to living space. 'Tiny houses' in an urbanized landscape raise essential questions:

    • How far is living space being considered an integral part of the city?
    • How much space do we need?
    • Can we reduce when we use the urban infrastructure to meet our needs?

For 'Beelden op Reis – Home is where the House is' several artists, invited by different art institutions throughout the Meuse-Rhine Euregion, approached this issue from an artistic point of view. Visitors can not alone visit the exhibition during the day, but are invited to stay over in the inhabitable installations during the night. Since these installations can easily be moved, it is possible to relocate the exhibition to different places and eventually encourage cultural cross-pollination within the (euregional) art scene.

The exhibitions will always be situated in public space and are free to visit. Visitors can as well buy an overnighter online. With that purchase visitors will get an adventurous night out, while helping 'Home is where the House is' to hit the road. In 2016 'Home is where the House is' will be on a roll:

„Home is where the House is“ – At Z33, Hasselt

We're kicking off the exhibition with a first exclusive overnighter during the Kunstennacht in Z33 in Hasselt. The 'Beelden op Reis' are on show in the beguinage of Z33 from 12th - 15th of May 2016. Book your stay in one of the four artworks during the kunstennacht from Thursday, 12th of May to Friday, 13th of May here!

„Home is where the House is“ – At Kapellerput, Heeze

The second journey will bring the mobile installations to the Kapellerput just under Eindhoven, where they'll stay in an idyllic surrounding next to the famous treehouse hotel Kaban . The 'Beelden op Reis' are on show at the Kapellerput from 4th - 5th of June 2016. Book your stay in one of the four artworks at the Kapellerput from Saturday, 4th of June to Sunday, 5th of June soon here!

Discover the night while neither being inside nor out:
The 'Knutschkugel' invites you for an adventurous and pretty cosy stay - if you take part in this adventure together. Under a dome of intertwined tubes you can explore the night sky together.
The 'Knutschkugel' comes with a flashlight, a sleeping bag and a matching sheet sleeping bag per person. The mattress is a queen size mattress, it's possible to connect the sleeping bags to each other.
You'll have the 'Knutschkugel' all for yourselves after the closing time of Z33. That means that between midnight and seven o'clock in the morning the port of the beguinage will be closed, to assure you a peaceful night out. You'll have acces to the toilet and shower at all times.
Check-in will take place during the evening of the Kunstennacht, the exact timing of the check-in as well as the check-out is negotiable. During the night a contactperson will available in case of emergency.
In case of heavy rain or storm there would be the possibility to seek shelter inside. But right now it seems as if the 12 of May will be more or less sunny with a temperature of at least 12°C during the night...
If you are cold easily it is recommended to bring some own blankets. And well, bringing your own pillow could make this adventurous night out just a little more comfortable...

Let your senses settle in the 'House of soft insights':
This mobile yurt invites you to literally crawl in the coat of a sheep. Surrounded by the smell of cedar and lavendel you are set cosy inbetween tender, warm and soft layers of felt. A modern variation on the way nomads survived extreme winters and summers in Mongolia for thousands of years.
